Bán chiếc áo cũ mèm với giá cao ngất ngưởng, nhiều người mới nghe đã nghĩ ảo tưởng, là mơ. Nhưng, đọc xong câu chuyện này, bạn sẽ thấy có những điều tưởng chừng như không thể lại là có thể.

Chuyện kể về một cậu bé con một gia đình nghèo khó. Một hôm cha cậu đưa cho cậu chiếc áo cũ trong nhà rồi nói: Con đem bán áo này rồi mua cho mẹ ít thuốc và chút gì đó bỏ bụng.

Cậu bé đem chiếc áo đi giặt rất cẩn thận, vì không có bàn là để là áo, cậu dùng bản chải để giặt chiếc áo, sau đó để chiếc áo lên một miếng gỗ phẳng trong bóng râm phơi khô. Chiều muộn hôm đó, cậu bé đem chiếc áo đến một ga tàu đông người qua lại. May cho cậu, một người đàn ông trung niên trong lúc vội vàng ra ga đã xui xẻo vấp ngã vào vũng nước đen kịt, chiếc áo trắng mới tinh trở nên nhem nhuốc đầy bùn đất. Người đàn ông không đủ thời gian để lục tìm áo thay trong đống hành lý đã gói ghém kỹ càng nên khi thấy cậu bé tội nghiệp đang rao bán áo thì mua luôn, thay vội cái áo đang mặc trên người. Người đàn ông nọ trả cho cậu bé 5 Đô la thay vì 2 đô la như giá cậu bé bán vì biết cậu đang cần tiền mua thuốc cho mẹ. Chiếc áo bẩn, ông ấy đem cho cậu bé, nói rằng cậu giặt đi, bán chắc cũng được giá hơn chiếc áo này.
Cậu vội vàng cầm số tiền bán được chạy một mạch ra hiệu thuốc, hiệu bánh mua về cho mẹ. Cậu cũng kể với cha chuyện hôm nay gặp với nụ cười nở trên môi. Cha cậu bảo cậu giặt chiếc áo kia đi, mai đem bán chắc được giá hơn. Nhà hiện không còn tiền, bữa nay có ăn, mai vẫn chưa biết ăn gì.
Con có thể bán chiếc áo này với 20 đô-la không?. Chiếc áo này đẹp gấp vạn lần áo hôm qua thì chắc cũng được giá...
Làm sao có thể được cơ chứ? Hôm qua chỉ là may mắn thôi...Cậu bé nghĩ thế nhưng không thốt lên thành tiếng. Cậu hiểu rằng, bữa ăn của gia đình đang trông chờ vào cái áo này.
Cuối cùng cậu bé nghĩ ra một cách, cậu nhờ anh họ của mình, anh cậu là một người rất đam mê hội hoạ, đã tự học vẽ rất đẹp. Cậu nhờ anh họ của mình vẽ cho cậu một con chim đại bàng và một chú chuột nhắt đáng yêu lên chiếc áo. Sau rồi cậu chọn một ngôi trường học, nơi có nhiều thiếu gia con nhà giàu theo học ở đó, cậu đứng ở cổng trường chào mời người mua. Vừa mới chào mời một lúc liền có một nhóm học sinh con nhà giàu lại xem. Cậu bé bảo 20 đô la, cậu thiếu gia nọ chốt mua. Thiếu gia khác bảo trả hơn 5 đô để được sở hữu. Tranh cãi một hồi, các thiếu gia quyết định là cái áo đó sẽ thuộc về ai trả được giá cao nhất. Cuối cùng, người ta mua chiếc áo đó cho cậu bé nghèo với giá 50 đô la. Đây là một số tiền khá lớn đối với gia đình cậu.
Cậu bé hứng khởi đem tiền về nhà cho cha.
Cậu bé muốn thử bán tiếp, cảm thấy mình làm được việc có ích cho gia đình. Cậu hỏi cha còn áo cũ nào nữa thì cậu mang đi bán tiếp.
Cha cậu đưa cho cậu chiếc áo cũ trong góc tủ. Lúc này, cậu bé không hề do dự như trước nữa, cậu đón nhận chiếc áo bằng cả hai tay mình, bắt đầu suy nghĩ…
Hai tuần sau, cuối cùng thì cơ hội cũng đã đến. Hôm đó, nữ diễn viên chính của bộ phim đang nổi tiếng, được nhiều người mến mộ đến thăm khu phố nghèo của cậu bé, có lẽ là để quay phần tiếp theo của bộ phim. Sau khi buổi họp với ký giả kết thúc, cậu bé mạnh dạn chen lên phía trước, chạy đến bên cạnh nữ diễn viên chính, đưa chiếc áo ra rồi xin cô ký tên lên đó. Cô diễn viên ngẩn người ra một lúc nhưng rồi vẫn vui vẻ tươi cười ký lên chiếc áo, không ai có thể nỡ từ chối một cậu bé dễ thương với ánh mắt hồn nhiên trong sáng như vậy.
Sau khi ký xong, cậu bé hỏi: “Cháu có thể bán chiếc áo này được không ạ?”
“Đương nhiên là có thể được rồi, đây là áo của cháu, cháu có thể bán nó nếu cháu muốn, đây là quyền tự do của cháu.”
Cậu bé liền đứng trên bục hô to: “Đây là chiếc áo do chính nữ diễn viên xinh đẹp ký tên, giá nó là 200 đô-la”.
Sau một lúc đấu giá, cuối cùng chiếc áo đã bán được với số tiền không tưởng, 1.200 đô-la.
Về đến nhà, cha cậu bé cảm động, ôm cậu vào lòng, hôn lên trán cậu: "Con thật sự rất giỏi, con đã làm nên được điều kỳ diệu cho gia đình mình".
