Thầy giáo tiếng Anh Quang Nguyen nói về sự khác biệt trong tuổi của phương Đông và tuổi của phương Tây, đồng thời hướng dẫn một cách thú vị để bắt đầu câu chuyện với người nước ngoài.

Năm 2010, tôi sang Mỹ. Một trong những người đầu tiên tôi kết bạn là Timmo - anh chàng đẹp trai người Đức. Ấn tượng đầu tiên của tôi về Timmo là cậu ta rất “thể thao” và thích uống bia. Timmo nói không uống nước lọc, khi khát sẽ uống bia hoặc sữa tươi. 

Lần thứ hai gặp Timmo, tôi hỏi tuổi cậu ta.

Quang: How old are you, Timmo?

Timmo: I am 24 years old. 

Quang: So I am older than you are. Were you born in 1986?

Timmo: No, I was born in 1985.

Quang: So you're 25 now, it's 2010. 

Timmo: No, I am only 24, my birthday will be in the next 2 months.

Và từ đó, tôi đã hiểu về cách tính tuổi của người phương Tây. Với người phương Tây, khi bạn sinh nhật lần đầu tiên, bạn bước sang tuổi đầu tiên - tức 1 tuổi. Từ đó đến sinh nhật thứ 2, các bạn vẫn 1 tuổi (chính xác là “1 year and x months old”, nhưng người ta rút gọn phần tháng đằng sau). Vậy khi tôi hỏi tuổi Timmo, cậu ta đã 24 tuổi 10 tháng. Nhưng do hỏi tuổi, không hỏi tháng nên tháng 8 năm 2010, Timmo vẫn 24 tuổi.


Miễn bàn về độ đúng - sai của cách tính tuổi phương Tây và phương Đông, đây trở thành một trong những đề tài lý thú mà tôi chia sẻ với các bạn sinh viên Mỹ và quốc tế. Khi tôi nói ngày sinh và tuổi của mình ở Việt Nam (hồi đó tính là 30 tuổi ta), các bạn sinh viên quốc tế đều mắt tròn mắt dẹt "Oh, really", và cảm thấy rất thú vị. So với các bạn Mỹ, như vậy dường như tôi luôn "bị" già đi 2 tuổi. Và suy cho cùng, tôi thích cách tính của người Mỹ và châu Âu hơn. Nhưng trong các văn bản pháp lý, cách tính của phương Đông và phương Tây là thống nhất.Ở Việt Nam, chúng ta tính tuổi theo năm. Tức là nếu bạn sinh năm 1985 thì vào ngày 1/1/2010, bạn tròn 25 tuổi (bất kể bạn sinh tháng nào năm 1985) và người ta cộng thêm 1 tuổi bạn nằm trong bụng mẹ nữa, vậy là bạn 26 tuổi.

Vậy, nếu các bạn ra nước ngoài, hãy nhớ cách tính tuổi của mình cho chính xác nhé. Để kết thúc bài viết, tôi xin chia sẻ một cách để bắt đầu câu chuyện về tuổi khi nói chuyện với người nước ngoài:

Quang: How old are you?

Foreigner: I am... years old

Quang: I am 30 years old, but in my country, I am 32 years old. Do you know why?

Foreigner (curious): Oh, really, why?
